Whether your travels bring you to La Plaza Inn during the summer months when the valley is alive with activity or during the quiet winter months when the land rests under blankets of snow, there is something for everyone in southern Colorado. Huerfano County is rich in history and geology. The Spanish Peaks, or as the locals call them "Wahatoyas", can be seen for miles in every direction. Ancient Indians believed the Spanish Peaks were the home of the rain gods, and therefore the source of life and thought of them as the "breasts of the world"
A visit to the area would not be complete without a drive on the famous Highway of Legends. This
eighty-two mile loop begins west of Walsenburg on Highway 12 through LaVeta. It winds through
the village of Cuchara and Stonewall before descending to the town of Trinidad. No matter the time
of year, the spectacular scenery and wildlife will not disappoint you.
Along the Highway of Legends you will come across the picturesque towns of LaVeta and Cuchara. LaVeta is rich in history dating back to 1840 when explorers such as John Francisco followed the Spanish into the rich valley. A visit to the Francisco fort will leave you feeling like you are stepping back in time. La Veta also is home to a rich Artisan community. Local galleries are filled with beautiful, hand-crafted, one of a kind items.
This high mountain town offers charm and a chance to escape the everyday. The area is home to excellent fishing and hiking opportunities in the summer months. No trip to Cuchara would be complete without a stop at the famous Dog Bar.
La Plaza Inn is centerally located in historic Walsenburg. The small town charm and friendly atmosphere are a welcome change from your hectic schedule. The shops around La Plaza offer something for everyone. Walsenburg has several western themed stores, in addition to avariety of boutiques offering fun eclectic items. Walsenburg is becoming a Mecca for antique shoppers as well. Experience and a sharp eye for detail will help in your search for that one of a kind collector piece.
In addition to the local shopping, Walsenburg is home to several museums and galleries. Follow the battles of the coal miners at the Walsenburg Mining Museum. Previously a jail built in 1896, the museum now houses artifacts from a bygone era.
The Museum of Friends (MOF) is a contemporary art museum opened in 2006. The expansive gallery features a collection of Hawaiian works in addition to diverse pieces from local artists. Check their schedule for a list of upcoming shows.
You can beat the heat during the summer at Walsenburg's newest water park, Walsenburg Wild Waters. With three different pools, a lazy river along with two giant slides, this fun entertainment for the whole family.
Just west of Walsenburg and minutes from La Plaza Inn is the oldest National Park in Colorado, Lathrop State Park. The park's two lakes offer a variety of boating and fishing packages for the outdoor enthusiast in your group. Look for activity to begin for the summer season in mid-May.
Lathrop also hosts one of Huerfano County's two golf courses. Walsenburg Golf Course is open year round and offers an interesting course for all skill levels. There is also a full service Bar and Restaurant on site. Grandote Peaks Golf Course is Huerfano County's other golfing opportunity. LaVeta's championship course is one of the area's best kept secrets. Known for it's majestic setting,
each hole offers both challenge and incredible beauty, a must see for the golf lover.
